Involved III @ Studio 303

This was held last November, but I've neglected to post about it due to... ok no excuse really, but better late then never!
The third edition of Wants&Needs Danse's Involved featured work by Simon Portigal, Emma Waltraud Howes, Hannah Dorozio, Thierry Huard, Jody Hegel, Victoria Stanton and Adriana Disman.

Always a pleasure to shoot!

Branch Magazine

Last month Gillian Zse and Roberutsu asked me if I wanted to contribute to their upcoming edition of Branch Magazine, a visual and literary arts online magazine. This gave me the extra push I needed in order to carry out a series I had been entertaining in my head for a while. I paired some old photos from various dance shows I've covered along with new material I shot for the occasion. The issue is now available on their website.

The most amazing part: finding out Fred Wah was the feature writer.
Wah has been an enormous inspiration for me over the past two years and continues to be so. Having my work featured alongside him is the biggest honor I have received yet.
Thank you Branch!

I also want to give a huge thank you to Angie Cheng, Helen Simard, Holly Greco, Andrew Tay and Benjamin Kamino for enabling me to do this.

Piss in the Pool 2011

So it's been a year since my proverbial cherry has been popped regarding the contemporary dance scene - now my favorite subject to photograph (thank you Andrew Tay for giving me such amazing opportunities). Last week was the 7th edition of Wants&Needs Danse's Piss in the Pool. Reviews were unanimous - hands down one of the best editions of this show.

For those unfamiliar with the concept.

"Piss in the Pool gives nine emerging choreographers the opportunity to create and present site specific work. This exciting event moves experimental dance out of the theatre and into the Bain St.Michel, an empty indoor pool located in the heart of Plateau Montreal.

The idea: Using their surroundings as inspiration choreographers have 10 days to adapt their unique visions to this unconventional space.

The Purpose: To give 9 diverse choreographic voices the chance to be heard and to challenge the notion that contemporary dance is heavy and abstract, by creating an atmosphere that is fun and unpretentious. Featuring swimsuit clad ushers and whistle wielding MC's the show is sure to excite the seasoned dance fan and newcomers alike."

Short&Sweet #6 @ FTA

"Short&Sweet gives 23 choreographers carte blanche to create whatever they want as long as it is under 3 minutes! A timekeeper is present for the event and any artist going over the allotted time frame has their music and lights immediately cut off."

Congratulations to Wants&Needs Danse for another great edition of Short&Sweet and for being a part of the Festival Trans-Amérique. Andrew and Sasha, you both rock so hard.
