Holidays for Others

December is only a week away and thoughts of the upcoming 'Holidays' have begun to creep into my consciousness. Last year, I spent them alone for the most part. I know this is a reality for many. With that in mind, on December 25th, 2011, I set out with my Nikkormat to capture what a no-frills Christmas looks like. Today, I decided to post some of the prints here for the first time.

Emptiness // Desertion // Cold // Forgotten

Edible Solace

Lately this is all I want to do...

I need more time off.

"I'm a little bit lonely these days."

Photobucket

Disclaimer: This may not make much sense. I, myself, am confused and my imagination needs to be tasered.

There's this one thing I want more than anything, OK? It's real simple too, yet so difficult at the same time, because it doesn't really depend entirely on me, the acquiring of this thing (which in fact isn't so much a 'thing', per se). I begin to question myself, my abilities, my value, my standing. Thought I had done everything right (almost), but apparently not. Apparently there is so much better, so much more interesting, so much more 'time worthy', the list goes on. I'm lost in the Sea of Doubt, for want of a better previously enjoyed trope. To remain within metaphor, I feel as though this ship won't come. I see plenty of ships, yes, but THIS SHIP won't come.

Which leads me to my current question: is it better to feel impassioned and lonely or bored and bored?
The answer seems obvious (maybe?), but I've now experienced both and as much as the former comes with more butterflies, it's as though those butterflies have mad fangs.

You know when you get a text message, your phone goes off and you get excited because you want it to be a certain person, but it's not and you feel that disappointment? Imagine that scenario, but with everything.

I don't honestly know where I am going with this and feel too tired to try to work it into a comprehensive whole. Maybe I'm giving up. All I know for sure is I'm a little bit lonely these days.

Inspirational Commercial Work

In the 90s Austrian artist, Erwin Wurm, shot a commercial series of photographs for Palmers, a lingerie brand.

Being back in school (for my last year), these images scream "analyze my connotative meanings! my signifier and signified!", but I will refrain from doing so - at least for the time being. All this to say these images are incredibly effective however which way you interpret them, so loaded. I love them.

My kind of advertising!

Images via but does it float.

MSG&ME | Market Musings

I would like to thank Maya Fuhr for showcasing my "Market Musings" editorial on her super fun website, MSG&ME. Loved the site's concept since day one. I would also like to thank my boyfriend for his patience and support during this project (and on the reg).

All photos were shot on 35mm film.

As a side note: I know things have been slow here lately, but that will change within the month (if all goes well). I'm working real hard to get back on top of things, so a big thanks to those of you who keep coming back!

At Times

I'll complicate the shit out of things that really don't need to be.

Time to stop.

Found

As we lie in the dark, our arms touch. You aren’t asleep yet. Your breath, too quiet. Can you hear the wind my frame barely contains? It is so very loud and you, so close, at least now.

That thought keeps me at sea. Your proximity and its duration, variables I hope become constants. Hope is like a rag I need to wring too frequently, the seawater dampens it.

I’d take this consumption and have it belt out over the fog, docks and hills, till the inner walls of all the homes shook in climactic perplexity, but it lacks amplification.

Something about your disposition – I want to carry you between my lips at all times and perhaps you prefer they remain sealed around your affairs.

If I tread for too long I may sink under the weight of my own offerings. They were never meant to burden.

Ring hitch, bottle sling, grief knot, fail to secure me, but with your voice alone, cast me a line and I’ll reel.

This map, it’s been redrawn, rewritten more times then I can count, but now that I found your latitude and longitude, I want to laminate its fragile remains marked with the singular outline of your features and every morning, have my eyes rise on your horizon.

(I Want) What Katie Ate...

Just came across this blog about five minutes ago and had to write up about it. What Katie Ate... essentially embodies all I love to see in food photography - accompanied by recipes! Everything is so beautifully captured in an authentic and (seemingly) candid manner, that I want to make every dish, dine at every restaurant and simply visit every location (some are not necessarily food-related) featured here. Katie Quinn Davies, damn!

Bye Bye Blackberry Photography

After five years, I've finally had it with watching my Blackberries die ungraceful deaths in the palm of my hand (the last one conked out after a mere year and a half). Sorry RIM, I've moved on and yes, at long last I am 100% Apple.

This means the occasional "Blackberry Photography" posts will now be substituted by "iPhotography" posts.

Naturally, my views on phonetography remain the same as always: I loathe it with a passion and these posts are a celebration of that loathing.

For those of you on Instagram, you can follow me directly - @ceeesk.

I Am My Own Betrayal

Guillaume Morissette has been a friend and colleague of mine for two years now. The first time I read a poem of his was during a poetry workshop. I was so impressed by the submission, I wrote my phone number down after my comments before handing it back to him.

Last week he launched his first book "I Am My Own Betrayal" and I seriously urge everyone to get a copy because this guy's work packs brilliance in every word.

I had the honour of taking the cover photograph. Here's a breakdown of its symbolism made by Guillaume himself.

Paul Bowles - The Circular Valley

I stumbled upon this photograph and it instantly brought back mental images I had while reading Paul Bowles' short story The Circular Valley a few years back. (Paul Bowles Collected Stories 1939-1976 is a tremendous read).

"Everything was the same as before, but not for the Atlájala; it had known the existence of man, and now there were no men in the valley - only the abandoned building with its empty rooms to make man's absence more poignant."

Voro

Having the opportunity to shoot for Voro was really exciting as I've always loved the place.
Coincidentally, food photography is rapidly becoming a new favourite of mine.

The rest of the set can be found on their website.
